The New Face of Power in Syria: From Jihadists to the Corridors of Command

This isn’t a spy movie or a Netflix series. It’s Syria in 2024. After years of civil war, dictatorships, and foreign meddling, the country delivers yet another surreal chapter. At the helm of Syrian Intelligence now stands a figure worthy of the worst nightmares: Abu Ahmed Hudood, also known as Anas Hassan Khattab. For those in the know, Khattab’s name rings more alarm bells than a fire drill. He’s not a mere bureaucrat nor a technocrat raised in the halls of Damascus. Instead, he’s a former key figure in Al-Qaeda in Iraq, sanctioned by the UN for his role in international terrorism.

A “Bold” (and Irrational) Choice

Khattab’s appointment is no coincidence. It comes from the man now ruling Syria, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, better known as Abu Mohammed al-Julani, leader of the jihadist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). Yes, the same Julani who, not long ago, appeared in propaganda videos as the direct heir of Al-Qaeda’s ideology. Today, he’s at the head of a ruined state, in a storyline that turns a terrorist into a head of state and a younger terrorist into the chief of intelligence. A choice that is both thought-provoking and deeply unsettling.

Khattab, an expert in logistics, finance, and arms, has been described by the UN as one of the most efficient cogs in the jihadist machine. For years, he ensured funds and resources reached the hands of Jabhat al-Nusra, the Syrian branch of Al-Qaeda. He was a strategist, a bureaucrat of terror, a figure who enabled jihad to survive and even thrive in its most critical moments. Not just a fighter, but a man capable of transforming a group of zealots into a structured, strategic organization.

From Jihad to the Desk: The New Face of Syrian Power

Now, this individual is being promoted, complete with a plaque on the door of his office, to lead Syrian Intelligence. Why? Because who better than him understands the mechanisms of terror? Who better than an experienced jihadist can ensure the new government doesn’t fall prey to its own methods? It’s the logic of paradox: fighting fire with gasoline. A clear message to the world: there’s no intention to change course, no attempt to distance from the jihadist past. On the contrary, it’s being embraced with pride and institutionalized.

And the West Applauds (with One Eye Closed)

While Julani appoints Khattab, Western capitals mostly watch in silence. Perhaps they’re too busy counting weapons sent to Ukraine or worrying about domestic inflation. Perhaps they still see the fall of Bashar al-Assad as a victory. But a victory for whom? For the Syrians now under the rule of those who terrorized them for years? For a West that replaced a dictator only to hand the reins to a jihadist posing as a statesman?

No, it’s not a victory. It’s another gross miscalculation, another example of how the West stumbles blindly through Middle Eastern affairs. And while we debate milk quotas and minimum wages, Syria cements a regime that is anything but moderate. Everyone knows it, but no one says it. It’s inconvenient, not now, perhaps never.

The Future of a Forgotten Country

Syria is a black hole. It has been for years and will continue to be. A devastated nation, sold out, and used as a battleground for others’ wars. Today, it has a new face of power, but it’s the same as always: violence, repression, and obscurantism. The rest of the world watches; some applaud, some shrug. And as we grow accustomed to the idea of jihadists in power, they consolidate their control, building a future we could have prevented. But we didn’t. Because Syria was never a priority.
