Between Detachment and Isolation: Europe Trapped by American Strategic Reorientation

Europe, once a master of international diplomacy and pragmatic geopolitics, now appears relegated to a subordinate role. Since the onset of the war in Ukraine, the European Union has been swept into Washington’s strategic wake, abandoning its traditional policies of mediation. This alignment has imposed heavy costs—economic, energy-related, political, and social. Europe not only risks losing its geopolitical centrality but also faces a structural crisis that will be difficult to overcome.

Geopolitical Subordination: A Europe Under American Influence

Since February 2022, European foreign policy has been defined in Washington. The American narrative, centered on a total victory for Kyiv, has dismissed any possibility of negotiation—a strategy that starkly contrasts with European traditions. Leaders like Emmanuel Macron, who previously advocated for strategic autonomy for the continent, have yielded to a war-focused agenda, fearing political isolation within NATO.

The sanctions against Russia exemplify this subordination. Europe has imposed unprecedented measures, ignoring the risks of retaliation and the weight of economic interdependencies. In 2021, EU-Russia trade was worth over €260 billion; the abrupt halt has severely impacted key sectors, from manufacturing to agriculture, while Moscow has redirected its trade to new partners like China, India, and Turkey.

Even the explosion of the Nord Stream pipeline, unofficially attributed to saboteurs with ties to American interests, did not provoke a strong response from Brussels. The destruction of a strategic infrastructure for Europe’s energy supply was treated almost as a secondary incident, reaffirming its political dependency on the United States.

The Economic Boomerang of Sanctions

Far from severely weakening Moscow, the sanctions have had devastating effects on Europe’s economy. According to European Commission data, gas costs for European industries rose by an average of 70% between 2022 and 2023. This increase has rendered many industrial sectors uncompetitive compared to global rivals. Germany, the continent’s economic pillar, has seen its trade surplus collapse, entering a deficit for the first time since 1991.

The U.S. Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), with its massive green transition incentives, has further accelerated the exodus of European capital and businesses across the Atlantic. According to a study by the European Central Bank, at least 10,000 jobs in the automotive and chemical industries are expected to relocate to the U.S. between 2023 and 2024, drawn by halved energy costs and favorable tax conditions.

Abandoning Russian gas, which accounted for 40% of Europe’s supply, has left the continent reliant on American liquefied natural gas (LNG). This shift not only brings higher costs but also less energy security, as LNG is subject to global market fluctuations. The United States, meanwhile, increased LNG exports by 68% in 2023, with prices up to four times higher than those paid by American consumers.

A Europe at Risk of Deindustrialization

Europe’s economic model, based on high productivity and competitive energy costs, is in crisis. Deindustrialization, a phenomenon already underway before the pandemic, has accelerated. Key sectors such as Germany’s automotive, chemical, and steel industries are losing ground due to a combination of high energy costs, U.S. economic dumping, and Chinese competition.

A striking example is the automotive sector. China, the world’s leading exporter of electric vehicles, has captured a significant share of the European market, with imports growing by 70% in 2023. The EU’s response, imposing anti-dumping duties, risks exacerbating the situation. China has already initiated selective retaliations against iconic European products like French wine, showcasing Beijing’s ability to exploit Europe’s internal divisions.

The Shadow of Trump and an Uncertain Future

Should Donald Trump return to power, Europe’s position could deteriorate further. Trump has already declared his intention to reduce military support for Kyiv and focus on American interests, leaving Europe to manage a war it cannot win nor end. This approach, combined with new protectionist tariffs, threatens to further isolate the EU, making it dependent on an increasingly closed and competitive American market.

The New World Order and Europe’s Decline

While Europe struggles to address challenges, the rest of the world is reorganizing. China is expanding its influence through the Belt and Road Initiative, forging alliances across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Emerging economies in the Global South are redefining global power dynamics, marginalizing Europe. Africa, in particular, is drifting away from the EU to embrace more advantageous partnerships with China and Russia.

In this context, Europe appears trapped in an identity crisis: unable to free itself from American tutelage but also incapable of constructing an independent and credible foreign policy. Geopolitical marginalization is evident—not a central actor, but a spectator in a multipolar world.

Conclusion: Europe Between Hope and Decline

The European Union stands at a crossroads: it can choose to strengthen its strategic autonomy, reclaiming a central role in the new world order, or continue passively down a path that condemns it to marginality. This requires bold decisions: an energy policy based on real diversification, protection of European industry against global dumping, and diplomacy that transcends the logic of ideological confrontation.

The risk, however, is that Europe proves incapable of overcoming its internal divisions, losing the opportunity to reassert itself as a global power. In a rapidly changing world, inertia is a sentence. And time to act is running out.
